The Shredder was the main antagonist of the 2014 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Shredder is as well the only antagonist in the 2014 Life's a Fish and Then You Fry short fan fiction story Kamalia vs. Shredder. The name of the Shredder character in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics is Oroku Saki, although it is currently unknown if this is intended to be the true name of the film incarnation of Shredder.

Shredder was the leader of the Foot Clan who sought to poison the population of New York City with a toxin that he created himself. Shredder's namesake obviously comes from the five blades he wields on his arms as part of his heavy samurai-like armor.

Appearance

Shredder wears heavy samurai armor incorporating different shades of gray and metallic silver highlights. Shredder wears a large samurai helmet with three crests; one tall crest in the center while the other two crests are built into the helmet itself. While most other parts of Shredder's body are covered by his armor, his helmet has small exposures in the eye areas to allow for clear vision. Shredder's helmet also has a mouth plate with molding that closely resembles fanged teeth. Shredder's torso armor has heavy plating with small gold highlights, while Shredder's shoulder's are protected by metallic silver armor baring small blades on each shoulder piece. Shredder wears a Japanese-style skirt with a cube pattern. Bucking tradition of most other incarnations of the character, this incarnation of Shredder does not wear a cape. Although, concept artwork of the character did show Shredder wearing a large grey cape with small blades running down the sides.

Shredder's arms are protected by heavy armor with a very mechanical appearance. As part of the armor protecting his arms, Shredder bares five blades on each arm. Two small blades cover each of his hands while many much larger retractable knife-like blades are mounted underneath the wrist area. Shredder's legs are completely protected by large heavy armor that is very mechanical in appearance, though it is organic in shape.

Personality

For lack of the better word, Shredder is mysterious, dark, sadistic, and seeks dominance and control of the modern world. Shredder worked with his henchman Eric Sacks (Shredder's adopted son who he raised in Japan many years ago and the creator of Shredder's armor) to poison the population of New York City and force them to buy the antidote, dubbed the "mutagen", from Sacks' company. While Shredder promised Sacks his money, he displayed no clear concern for the currency part of the cause. Shredder's true motives for his plan are currently unknown, although it is easy to conclude that Shredder is simply a tyrant with a lust for power and control.

Shredder is as well sadistic, as he was perfectly willing to kill Splinter to discourage the turtles from fighting him. Whether Shredder used this as a means of avoiding the fight because he felt he would meet his match or if he simply did this to strike fear into the turtles is unknown, as Shredder still slit Splinter in the throat with his blades after the turtles dropped their weapons. Shredder is bilingual, able to speak fluent Japanese and intermediate English.

Kamalia vs. Shredder

After attempting to poison the population of New York City, the Shredder escapes from prison along with his armor with the help of a mysterious unseen entity. Now free from custody, Shredder begins tearing through New York City on a conquest to find the possible residuum of his toxin left at Sacks' company.

One night, as Shredder is meandering the remains of the steeple from Sacks' tower containing the toxin, Kamalia Phellan appears in her werewolf form and declares that she will stop Shredder from extracting the toxin from the steeple. Shredder laughs in sarcastic disbelief and retorts "How do you intend to defeat me, mongrel?". Kamalia, offended by Shredder's question, leaps at him in an attempted attack. However, Shredder aims and fires three blades from his right arm at Kamalia, of which Kamalia barely manages to dodge. Having fended off Kamalia, Shredder continues to tear apart the steeple and eventually intends extract the residuum of the toxin from within.

After waiting for several minutes of holding her breath at risk of breathing the air contaminated by the recently released toxin, Kamalia takes a risk of leaping at Shredder from behind. As Kamalia prepares to leap at Shredder, Shredder himself bares the blades from his left arm at the approaching Kamalia. While leaping, Kamalia manages to slice off Shredder's blades with her claws. Now without any weapons aside from his own armor, Shredder begins fighting Kamalia with his own bare hands.

After a long half hour of fighting with each other, Kamalia succeeds in knocking Shredder's helmet off from his head. Feeling defeated, Shredder remarks "Very impressive for a mongrel, but you and I both know that I will win in the end.". Kamalia takes a breath and retorts "Not around here you won't!". Kamalia forcefully kicks Shredder in the chest and sends him into the remains of the steeple, killing Shredder with his own toxin as he screams in agony.

Notes

  • In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Shredder was portrayed by Tohoru Masamune. William Fichtner, who portrayed Eric Sacks, was originally cast for the role of Shredder. The Nintendo DS game also features Sacks as Shredder, rather than the film incarnation of Shredder.[1]
